The Masorti Movement is honored to provide worshipers from all streams of Judaism the opportunity to pray at the Western Wall in a spirit of pluralism and equality, free of charge. This sacred space, located at the southern end of the Western Wall, was designated by the government of Israel as an egalitarian prayer area. For over 20 years, the Masorti Movement has maintained and managed this space, ensuring it meets the prayer needs of all who uphold the values of inclusion and respect.
The Western Wall Open for Every Jew
About the Egalitarian Kotel
The Kotel, or Western Wall, in Jerusalem is the holiest site for Jews. For millennia, Jews have yearned to stand here in prayer. The Kotel forms the western retaining wall of the Temple Mount, where the First and Second Temples once stood.
After the Second Temple's destruction by the Romans in 70 CE, much of the southern Wall lay buried under rubble until its rediscovery during archaeological excavations in 1867. At the southern end lies Robinson’s Arch, an ancient entrance to the Temple Mount. The Egalitarian Kotel is situated in the area excavated beneath Robinson’s Arch.
In 2000, following a prolonged public struggle, the Masorti Movement secured access to conduct egalitarian prayer services at the Western Wall. On January 31, 2016, an agreement was reached to establish a permanent egalitarian prayer area under the explicit management of the Masorti Movement and its partners.
The unique prayer space of Ezrat Israel, managed and maintained by the Masorti Movement, provides a welcoming environment for egalitarian prayer services. It hosts Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, Kabbalat Shabbat services during summer months, holiday commemorations, and group visits. Masorti offers complimentary access to prayer books, Torah scrolls, and other resources for prayer services.
Masorti is honored to maintain this inclusive space for the entire Jewish world. With your help, we can ensure this sacred option remains available for generations to come.
