Your friends and relatives in America couldn't vote in the Israeli elections, but they do have an opportunity to cast their ballot for the sort of Jewish state they envision. You need to tell them how, and why it's so important...
The results of Israel's national election are a devastating blow to all who cherish religious freedom and the dream of a pluralistic and inclusive Israel. The Haredi parties that will inevitably be a part of PM Netanyahu's coalition are already stating publicly that the price they are demanding in return for their support includes the revocation of government decisions promoting greater openness in matters of marriage and conversion and the cancellation of punishment that was to be imposed on ultra-Orthodox young men who refuse to be drafted. They are also insisting on increased State funding for ultra-Orthodox institutions beyond the exaggerated amounts that are already allocated.
There is something you can do to make a difference...
Elections are currently taking place in the United States for the next World Zionist Congress. This international gathering in Jerusalem of 2,000 Jews from Israel and around the world is a kind of parliament of the Jewish people. It is there that the leadership of the World Zionist Organization, Jewish National Fund, and the Jewish Agency will be determined. These decisions will impact on policy and budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Now more than ever it is critical that Conservative/Masorti Jewry be strongly represented at this Congress.
That means getting people in America to vote MERCAZ, the political arm of the Masorti/Conservative Movement that is running in these elections. It is dedicated to shaping an Israel that is:
Pluralistic ● Committed to a two-state solution ● Jewish and democratic ● Advancing social justice
Ensuring equal rights for minorities ● Egalitarian ● Environmentally conscious ● Inclusive
